'ypxfrd' Daemon Flaw May Disclose Files to Local or Remote Users
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1005389
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1005389
CVE Reference:   CVE-2002-1199   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Dec 15 2003
Original Entry Date:  Oct 9 2002
Impact:   Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): HP Tru64 UNIX 4.0F, 4.0G, 5.0A, 5.1, 5.1A; HP-UX 10.20, 11.0, 11.11, 11.22; Some other UNIX OSs are affected
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in the ypxfrd NIS map transfer daemon in several UNIX-based operating systems. A local or remote user can view any file on the system.

It is reported that the daemon does not properly validate user-supplied arguments. When the getdbm procedure is called, the ypxfrd daemon reportedly creates a path to the /var/yp/domain/map file, with the 'domain' and 'map' arguments provided by the local user. The software does not filter the arguments for directory traversal characters. A local user can supply a path name to a symbolic link (that is linked to a critical file on the system) to be able to read any file on the system.

Depending on the ypxfrd configuration, a remote user may be able to access files located outside of the /var/yp directory.

According to reports, the following operating systems are known to be affected: Caldera (SCO) OpenServer, Caldera OpenLinux, HP-UX, HP Tru64 UNIX, IBM AIX, and Sun Solaris.

Impact:   A remote user may be able to view files on the YP server. A local user may be able to view files with elevated privileges.
Solution:   This alert includes the fix information for HP operating systems. However, several other UNIX-based operating systems are affected. See the Message History for additional alerts regarding the other affected vendors.

HP has indicated that HP-UX is affected, but no fix is available yet.

HP has issued Early Release Patches (ERPs) for all supported versions of HP Tru64 UNIX/TruCluster Server. HP notes that the ERP kits use dupatch to install and will not install over any Customer-Specific-Patches (CSPs) which have file intersections with the ERPs. Contact your normal support channel and request HP Tru64 services elevate a case to Support Engineering if a CSP must be merged with one of the ERPs.

At the time of writing this document, HP is currently investigating
the potential impact to HP-UX released Operating System software
products. As further information becomes available HP will provide
notice of the availability of any necessary patches through standard
security bulletin announcements and be available from your normal
HP Services support channel.

HP Tru64 UNIX/TruCluster Server:

Early Release Patches (ERPs) are now available for all supported

After completing the update, HP and Compaq strongly recommend
that you perform an immediate backup of the system disk so that
any subsequent restore operations begin with updated software.
Otherwise, the updates must be re-applied after a future restore
operation. Also, if at some future time the system is upgraded to
a later patch release or version release, reinstall the
appropriate ERP.
