(HP Issues Fix) Re: HP Procurve Switch Can Be Reset By Remote Users Due to No Authentication on 'device_reset' Command
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1005278
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1005278
CVE Reference:   GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Sep 24 2002
Impact:   Denial of service via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): prior to C.09.16; HP ProCurve 4000M (J4121A), 8000M (J4110A), 2424M (J4093A), 2400M (J4122A), 1600M (J4120A)
Description:   A denial of service vulnerability was reported in HP's Procurve switch. A remote user can cause the device to reset.

Techserve issued an advisory warning that a remote user can request the following URL to execute the device_reset command (the "2" represents the switch nummber in the stack of switches):

http://<IP ADDRESS>/sw2/cgi/device_reset?

According to the report, the command is not authenticated by the switch.

A remote user can apparently issue the command repeatedly to cause denial of service conditions.

The report notes that remote IP access features are not enabled by default. Also, the report suggests that other CGI commands may suffer from the same lack of authentication, but no specific commands are identified. Other HP switch products that implement the same firmware may reportedly be affected by the same flaw.

Impact:   A remote user can reset a switch. By doing this repeatedly, the remote user can deny service to other users.
Solution:   HP has issued a fixed version of the firmware (C.09.16), available as image file C_09_16.swi at:

<www.hp.com/rnd/software/switches.htm>

System: hprc.external.hp.com (192.170.19.51)
Login: procurve
Password: 4000m1

FTP Access: ftp://procurve:4000m1@hprc.external.hp.com/
or: ftp://procurve:4000m1@192.170.19.51/

file: C_09_16.swi

Copy the C_09_16.swi file to a protected directory. If you wish to verify the md5 sum please refer to:

Patch sums and the MD5 program

The md5 sum for C_09_16.swi
is: F02739F00BAB893E7156ABA0C66915B7

The cksum output is: 456036683 1141763 C_09_16.swi

Next please follow both of the steps outlined below.

a. Update commander and member switches to the most current version of code - C.09.16, or greater.

b. Configure the stack commander with a manager password (this password is propagated to the member switches within the stack).

For configuration details, please refer to 'Release Notes for Software Update C.09.xx for the HP ProCurve Switch 1600M, 2400M, 2424M, 4000M, and 8000M' on the HP ProCurve web site:

 A. Background
HP has learned of a potential denial of service vulnerability
which may affect the remote operational capability of the
ProCurve switches listed below. Termed the "remote reset
vulnerability", it specifically affects the following products:
              HP ProCurve Switch 4000M (J4121A)
              HP ProCurve Switch 8000M (J4110A)

 B. Recommended solution
   1. Download software image file C_09_16.swi from the ftp site.
This file is temporary and will be deleted when a product
      upgrade is available from:

             or: ftp://procurve:4000m1@192.170.19.51/

     file: C_09_16.swi

Note: There is an ftp defect in IE5 that may result in a
browser hang. To work around this:
        - Select Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced
        - Un-check the option: [ ] Enable folder view for FTP sites
