Caldera (SCO) Buffer Overflow in 'ndcfg' Command on UnixWare/Open UNIX Lets Local Users Obtain Elevated Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1005117
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1005117
CVE Reference:   CVE-2002-0981   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Aug 22 2002
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via local system, Root access via local system, User access via local system
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): UnixWare 7.1.1, Open UNIX 8.0.0
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in the 'ndcfg' command on Caldera (SCO) UNIX. A local user could obtain elevated privileges.

It is reported that a buffer overflow in the processing of command line arguments can be triggered by a local user. Because the ndcfg command raises its privileges with the security subsystem (as opposed to being set user id [setuid]), a local user could obtain elevated privileges on the system.

The following binary is affected:

/usr/lib/netcfg/bin/ndcfg

Impact:   A local user could obtain elevated privileges.

[Editor's note: Caldera does not make it clear whether this yields elevated user or elevated group privileges or both. They also do not indicate whether this flaw yields root privileges or some other level of privileges.]

Solution:   Caldera has released a fix.

malicious user to run code of their choice with raised
	privileges.

2. Vulnerable Supported Versions

	----------------------------------------------------------------------
	UnixWare 7.1.1 /usr/lib/netcfg/bin/ndcfg
	Open UNIX 8.0.0 /usr/lib/netcfg/bin/ndcfg

3. Solution

The proper solution is to install the latest packages.
