Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Microsoft Malware Protection Engine. A local user can obtain elevated privileges on the target system.

A local user can create a specially crafted Registry key that, when scanned by the malware engine, will trigger a flaw in 'mpengine.dll' and execute arbitrary code with LocalSystem privileges.

The following products include the vulnerable component and are affected:

Windows Live OneCare
Microsoft Security Essentials
Microsoft Windows Defender
Microsoft Forefront Client Security
Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010
Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool

The Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) is only affected when run after being offered via Automatic Update. It is not affected when run manually.

The Microsoft Antigen for Exchange, Microsoft Antigen for SMTP Gateway, Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server, Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010, Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint, Forefront Security for Office Communications Server, and Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper (part of Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset) products are not affected.

Cesar Cerrudo of Argeniss reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A local user can obtain LocalSystem privileges on the target system.
Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (1.1.6603.0), available automatically.
