Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): prior to 2.2.4
Description:   Two vulnerabilities were reported in GNU nano. A local user can obtain elevated privileges on the target system.

The software does not check to determine if an edited file owned by a different user has changed during editing [CVE-2010-1160]. A local user can replace the file being edited by a different target user with a symbolic link (symlink) to cause the symlinked file to be written with the privileges of the target user.

The software does not properly create backup files when the root user is editing a file owned by another user [CVE-2010-1161]. A local user can exploit a race condition to take ownership of arbitrary files.

Dan Rosenberg reported these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A local user can obtain elevated privileges on the target system.
