BIND DNSSEC NSEC/NSEC3 Error May Let Remote Users Spoof NXDOMAIN Responses
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1023474
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1023474
CVE Reference:   CVE-2010-0097   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jan 20 2010
Impact:   Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 9.0.x, 9.1.x, 9.2.x, 9.3.x, 9.4.0 - 9.4.3-P4, 9.5.0 - 9.5.2-P1, 9.6.0 - 9.6.1-P2
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in BIND. A remote user may be able to spoof NXDOMAIN responses.

A remote user can exploit a flaw in the DNSSEC NSEC/NSEC3 validation code to potentially cause invalid NXDOMAIN responses to be cached. The server may return the invalid NXDOMAIN data with the AD flag set.

The vendor indicates that while cache poisoning is difficult to exploit, protection against denial-of-service attacks against a secure zone may be impaired.

All DNSSEC-validating resolvers are affected.

Impact:   A remote user may be able to spoof NXDOMAIN responses.
Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (9.4.3-P5, 9.5.2-P2, 9.6.1-P3).
