Mozilla Firefox 'window.opener' Flaw May Let Remote Users Gain Chrome Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1023344
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1023344
CVE Reference:   CVE-2009-3986   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Dec 16 2009
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 3.0 prior to 3.0.16, 3.5 prior to 3.5.6
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Mozilla Firefox. A remote user may be able to cause arbitrary code to be executed with chrome privileges on the target user's browser.

A remote user can cause a content window to be opened by a chrome window via the 'window.opener' property and then content in the new window can access functions in the chrome window. On some configurations, arbitrary JavaScript code can be executed with chrome privileges.

The vendor indicates that on a standard browser configuration, a remote user cannot exploit this flaw to execute arbitrary code. If an add-on opens arbitrary or user-affected content in a vulnerable manner, remote code execution may be possible.

David James reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can create a file that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.
Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (3.0.16, 3.5.6).
