Mac OS X ImageIO Bugs Disclose Memory Contents to Local Users and Let Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1020144
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1020144
CVE Reference:   CVE-2008-1573, CVE-2008-1574   (Links to External Site)
Date:  May 29 2008
Impact:   Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): prior to 10.5.3
Description:   Two vulnerabilities were reported in Mac OS X ImageIO. A local user can view portions of system memory. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.

A user can create a specially crafted BMP or GIF file that, when loaded, will trigger an out-of-bounds memory read in the BMP and GIF image decoding engine and disclose potentially sensitive memory contents to the user [CVE-2008-1573]. Gynvael Coldwind of Hispasec reported this vulnerability.

A remote user can create a specially crafted JPEG2000 image file that, when loaded by the target user, will trigger an integer overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target user's system [CVE-2008-1574]. The code will run with the privileges of the target user.

Impact:   A local user can view portions of system memory.

A remote user can create a file that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix as part of Security Update 2008-003 and Mac OS X v10.5.3, available from the Software Update pane in System Preferences, or Apple's Software Downloads web site at:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
