SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1037347
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1037347
CVE Reference:   CVE-2016-9379, CVE-2016-9380   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Nov 25 2016
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 2.0 and later
Description:   Two vulnerabilities were reported in Xen. A local user on the guest system can cause denial of service conditions on the host system. A local user on the guest system can obtain potentially sensitive information from the host system.

The pygrub boot loader emulator does not properly validate data returned to the calling function. When the user requests the 'S-expression' output format [CVE-2016-9379] or the 'nul-delimited' output format [CVE-2016-9380], the system may inject data into the bootloader configuration file.

A local user on the guest system can exploit this to cause denial of service conditions on the host system or potentially sensitive information from the host system.

Guest systems that have been configured by the host administrator to boot using pygrub are affected.

Daniel Richman and Gabor Szarka of the Cambridge University Student-Run Computing Facility reported these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A local user on the guest system can cause denial of service conditions on the host system.

A local user on the guest system can obtain potentially sensitive information from the host system.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (xsa198.patch).
