SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1025860
CVE Reference:   CVE-2011-1743, CVE-2011-1744   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jul 28 2011
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 2.1.1
Description:   Two vulnerabilities were reported in EMC Captiva eInput. A remote user can cause denial of service conditions. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks. A remote user can view files on the target user's system.

The system does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input [CVE-2011-1743]. A remote user can cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the EMC Captiva software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A remote user can create specially crafted HTML that, when loaded by the target user, will invoke the EMC eInput ActiveX control and obtain files on the target user's system or cause denial of service conditions [CVE-2011-1744].

Impact:   A remote user can cause denial of service conditions.

A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the EMC Captiva software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A remote user can view files on the target user's system.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (2.1 Hot Fix 2.1.1.37).

The vendor's advisory is available in EMC Knowledgebase solution esg123198.
