Mozilla Thunderbird DLL Loading Error Lets Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1024407
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1024407
CVE Reference:   CVE-2010-3131   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Sep 8 2010
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 3.0 prior to 3.0.7, 3.1 prior to 3.1.3
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Mozilla Thunderbird. A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Mozilla Thunderbird running on Windows XP passes an insufficiently qualified path when loading the 'dwmapi.dll' external library. A remote user can exploit this by creating a specially crafted DLL file on a remote share (e.g., WebDAV, SMB share). When Thunderbird is started by the target user and loads specially crafted HTML, the Thunderbird application may load the remote user's DLL instead of the intended DLL and execute arbitrary code. The code will run with the privileges of the target user.

This type of exploit is also known as "binary planting" or "DLL preloading".

On Windows Vista and more recent Windows operating systems that include the 'dwmapi.dll' file, Mozilla Thunderbird loads the proper DLL and is not affected.

Acros Security and Haifei Li of FortiGuard Labs independently reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can cause the target application to execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.
Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (3.0.7, 3.1.3).

The vendor's advisory is available at:
