(IBM Issues Fix) ToolTalk Database Server Heap Overflow in Processing '.rec' Files Lets Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1024218
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1024218
CVE Reference:   CVE-2010-0083   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jul 19 2010
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in the ToolTalk Database Server. A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system in certain cases.

A user with the ability to create a specially crafted '.rec' database file on the target system can then connect to the rpc.ttdbserverd service to trigger a heap overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Rodrigo Rubira Branco of the Check Point Vulnerability Discovery Team (VDT) reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A user with the ability to place files on the target system can execute arbitrary code on the target system.
Solution:   IBM has issued a fix (APARs IZ72090, IZ72091, IZ72092, IZ72093, IZ72094, IZ72095, IZ72096, IZ72097).

DETAILED INFORMATION

I. DESCRIPTION

"This vulnerability can be triggered by creating a fake database
(.rec file) on the system and calling remote procedure 7 of
ToolTalk database server pointing to this database, leading to a
heap overflow. Remote command execution can be achieved if you
can place files on the host via FTP or HTTP servers for example."
