Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) in the processing of certain COM objects. A remote user may be able to cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.

IE does not properly instantiate COM Objects that are not intended to be used in IE. A remote user can create specially crafted HTML that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.

Several COM objects are affected, including:

javaprxy.dll
devenum.dll
diactfrm.dll
wmm2filt.dll
fsusd.dll
dmdskmgr.dll
browsewm.dll
browseui.dll
shell32.dll
mshtml.dll
inetcfg.dll
infosoft.dll
query.dll
syncui.dll
clbcatex.dll
clbcatq.dll
comsvcs.dll
msconf.dll
msdtctm.dll
mmsys.cpl
wmiprov.dll
wbemess.dll
qedit.dll
blnmgr.dll

Microsoft credits Bernhard Mueller and Martin Eiszner of SEC Consult for some of the affected Class Identifiers and the NSFOCUS Security Team for reporting one of the Class Identifiers.

[Editor's note: It appears that this vulnerability was initially reported in June 2005 by SEC Consult as affecting only javaprxy.dll (See Alert ID 1014329).]

Impact:   A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system. The code will run with the privileges of the target user.
