(Debian Issues Fix) Mailreader enriched/richtext MIME Type Filtering Bug Lets Remote Users Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1013613
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1013613
CVE Reference:   CAN-2005-0386   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Mar 30 2005
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): prior to 2.3.26
Description:   An input validation vulnerability was reported in Mailreader. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The software does not properly filter HTML code from e-mail messages when MIME type 'text/enriched' or 'text/richtext' messages. A remote user can send a specially crafted e-mail message that, when viewed by a target user with mailreader, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the Mailreader software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Ulf Harnhammar from the Debian Security Audit Project discovered this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the Mailreader software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.
Solution:   Debian has released a fix.

Debian-specific: no
CVE ID : CAN-2005-0386

Ulf Härnhammar from the Debian Security Audit Project discovered a
cross-site scripting problem in mailreader, a simple, but powerful WWW
mail reader system, when displaying messages of the MIME types
text/enriched or text/richtext.

For the stable distribution (woody) this problem has been fixed in

For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem has been fixed in
version 2.3.29-11.

We recommend that you upgrade your mailreader package.
