Debian debmake Unsafe Temporary Directories May Let Local Users Gain Elevated Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1012678
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1012678
CVE Reference:   CAN-2004-1179   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Dec 24 2004
Impact:   Modification of system information, Modification of user information, User access via local system
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in debmake for Debian Linux. A local user may be able to gain elevated privileges.

Debian reported that the debstd script in debmake creates temporary directories in an insecure manner. A local user can create a symbolic link (symlink) from a critical file on the system to a temporary directory name to be used by debstd. Then, when debstd is executed by the target user, the symlinked file will be overwritten with the privileges of the target user.

Javier Fernandez-Sanguino Pena is credited with reporting this flaw.

Impact:   A local user may be able to gain elevated privileges.
Solution:   The vendor has issued a fixed version for Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 alias woody:

Package : debmake
Vulnerability : insecure temporary files
Problem-Type : local
Debian-specific: yes
CVE ID : CAN-2004-1179
Debian Bug : 286382

Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña noticed that the debstd script from
debmake, a deprecated helper package for Debian packaging, created
temporary directories in an insecure manner. This can be exploited by
a malicious user to overwrite arbitrary files owned by the victim.

For the stable distribution (woody) this problem has been fixed in
version 3.6.10.woody.1.

For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem has been fixed in
version 3.7.7.

We recommend that you upgrade your debmake package.

Upgrade Instructions
- --------------------

wget url
will fetch the file for you
dpkg -i file.deb
        will install the referenced file.

If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for
sources.list as given below:

apt-get update
        will update the internal database
apt-get upgrade
        will install corrected packages

You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the
footer to the proper configuration.

These files will probably be moved into the stable distribution on
  its next update.
