(Red Hat Issues Fix for RHEL) Rsync Input Validation Error in sanitize_path() May Let Remote Users Read or Write Arbitrary Files
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1011136
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1011136
CVE Reference:   CAN-2004-0792   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Sep 2 2004
Impact:   Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Modification of system information, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 2.6.2 and prior versions
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in rsync when running in daemon mode with chroot disabled. A remote user may be able read or write files on the target system that are located outside of the module's path.

A remote user can supply a specially crafted path to cause the path cleaning function to generate an absolute filename instead of a relative one. The flaw resides in the sanitize_path() function.

Impact:   A remote user can obtain or potentially write files on the target system with the privileges of the rsync daemon.
Solution:   Red Hat has released a fix.

3. Problem description:

The rsync program synchronizes files over a network.

Versions of rsync up to and including version 2.6.2 contain a path
sanitization issue. This issue could allow an attacker to read or write
files outside of the rsync directory. This vulnerability is only
exploitable when an rsync server is enabled and is not running within a
chroot. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org)
has assigned the name CAN-2004-0792 to this issue.

Users of rsync are advised to upgrade to this updated package, which
contains a backported patch and is not affected by this issue.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied. Use Red Hat
Network to download and update your packages. To launch the Red Hat
Update Agent, use the following command:

    up2date

For information on how to install packages manually, refer to the
following Web page for the System Administration or Customization
guide specific to your system:
