Date: Feb 24 2004
|
Impact:
Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
|
Fix Available: Yes Vendor Confirmed: Yes
|
Version(s): 2.7 and prior versions
|
Description:
Some vulnerabilities were reported in Metamail in the decoding of MIME messages. A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system.
It is reported that Ulf Harnhammar discovered several vulnerabilities in Metamail versions 2.7 and prior versions. A remote user can reportedly send a specially crafted message so that when the target user views the message and Metamail parses the message, arbitrary code will be executed on the target user's system.
Two of the bugs are format string vulnerabilities [CVE: CAN-2004-0104] and two of the bugs are buffer overflows [CVE: CAN-2004-0105].
A format string flaw can reportedly be triggered by a message with a "multipart/alternative" media type and with a body part with a MIME "Content-Type" header that has parameter names or values containing formatting characters. The flaw reportedly resides in the SaveSquirrelFile() function in 'metamail.c'.
Another format string flaw can reportedly be triggered when an e-mail message contains encoded non-ASCII characters in the mail headers with an unknown encoding and with encoded text that contains formatting characters. The flaw reportedly resides in the PrintHeader() function, also in 'metamail.c'.
The report indicates that a buffer overflow in the PrintHeader() function in 'metamail.c' can be triggered by an e-mail message with encoded non-ASCII characters in the mail header where the section that specifies a character set is overly long.
Another buffer overflow exists in the 'splitmail' application, the report said. An overly long Subject header line can reportedly trigger the overflow in the ShareThisHeader() function in 'splitmail.c'.

|
Impact:
A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target system when the target user views a malicious e-mail message.

Solution:
Debian has released a fix for the stable distribution (woody) in version 2.7-45woody.2 and for the unstable distribution (sid) in version 2.7-45.2 (pending).

Subject: [SECURITY] [DSA 449-1] New metamail packages fix arbitrary code execution

Package : metamail
Vulnerability : buffer overflow, format string bugs
Problem-Type : remote
Debian-specific: no
CVE ID : CAN-2004-0104 CAN-2004-0105
Ulf Härnhammar discovered two format string bugs (CAN-2004-0104) and
two buffer overflow bugs (CAN-2004-0105) in metamail, an
implementation of MIME. An attacker could create a carefully-crafted
mail message which will execute arbitrary code as the victim when it
is opened and parsed through metamail.
We have been devoting some effort to trying to avoid shipping metamail
in the future. It became unmaintainable and these are probably not
the last of the vulnerabilities.
For the stable distribution (woody) these problems have been fixed in
version 2.7-45woody.2.
For the unstable distribution (sid) these problems will be fixed in
version 2.7-45.2.
We recommend that you upgrade your metamail package.
