(Debian Issues Revised Fix for 3.0) Sendmail Buffer Overflow in Parsing Addresses May Let Remote or Local Users Execute Arbitrary Code With Root Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1006485
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1006485
CVE Reference:   CAN-2003-0161   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Apr 4 2003
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via local system, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Root access via local system, Root access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 8.12.8 and prior versions
Description:   A buffer overflow vulnerability was reported in Sendmail in the address parsing code. A remote or local user could cause arbitrary code to be executed with root privileges.

The flaw reportedly resides in 'parseaddr.c' in a char to int variable conversion. Data received from untrusted sources, potentially including e-mail addresses or DNS domain names, that contain extended ASCII characters and that are longer than a certain size may be able to trigger the flaw and cause code to be executed.

The vendor is reporting this as a "critical security problem."

The vendor credits Michal Zalewski for reporting the flaw.

Impact:   A remote or local user could cause arbitrary code to be executed with root privileges.
Solution:   Debian has released a revised advisory with new packages for the stable distribution (3.0, aka woody). The old packages for the stable distribution (woody) did not work as expected and should not be used.

Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 alias woody:

This is a major brown paperbag update. The old packages for the
stable distribution (woody) did not work as expected and you should
only update to the neww packages mentioned in this advisory. The
packages in the old stable distribution (potato) are working
properly. I'm awfully sorry for the inconvenience.

At the moment updated packages are only available for alpha, i386 and sparc.

The original advisory was:

Michal Zalewski discovered a buffer overflow, triggered by a char to
int conversion, in the address parsing code in sendmail, a widely used
powerful, efficient, and scalable mail transport agent. This problem
   is potentially remotely exploitable.

For the stable distribution (woody) this problem has been
fixed in version 8.12.3-6.3.

We recommend that you upgrade your sendmail packages.
