'mod_frontpage' Module for Apache Web Server Has Buffer Overlow in 'fpexec.c' That Allows Remote Users to Execute Arbitrary Code on the System with Root Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1003767
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1003767
CVE Reference:   GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Mar 8 2002
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, Root access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): prior to 1.6.1
Description:   A buffer overflow vulnerability was reported in the mod_frontpage module for the Apache web server. A remote user may be able to gain root acess on the system.

It is reported that fpexec.c contains a buffer overflow. It is also reported that the mod_frontpage binary is configured with set user id (suid) root privileges. As a result, a remote user can apparently trigger the buffer overflow to execute arbitrary code on the server with root privileges. No further details were provided.

Impact:   A remote user may be able to execute arbitrary code on the server with root privileges, giving that user root access on the system.
Solution:   For Mandrake Linux users, updated packages are available. For non-Mandrake users, no solution information is available. However, it is expected that fixes for other Linux/UNIX distributions will be available shortly [and will be posted to the Message History section when we receive further information].

                Mandrake Linux Security Update Advisory
________________________________________________________________________

Package name: mod_frontpage
Advisory ID: MDKSA-2002:021
Date: March 7th, 2002
Affected versions: 8.0, 8.1
________________________________________________________________________

Problem Description:

A problem was found in versions of improved mod_frontpage prior to
1.6.1 regarding a lack of boundary checks in fpexec.c. This means that
the suid root binary is exploitable for buffer overflows. This could
be exploited by remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on the
server with superuser privileges. Although there are no known exploits
available, if you use mod_frontpage you are strongly encouraged to
 upgrade.

This update for Mandrake Linux has been completely reworked and is
easier to configure and use, as well as supporting the new FrontPage
 2002 extensions.
