Category:   Application (Generic)  >   Pcltotiff Vendors:   HP (Compaq)
(Vendor Issues Corrected Advisory) Re: HP/UX Pcltotiff File Conversion Utility May Allow a Local User to Cause a Denial of Service Condition
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1001437
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1001437
CVE Reference:   GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Apr 27 2001
Impact:   Denial of service via local system, User access via local system
Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): HP9000 Series 700/800 running HP-UX releases 10.01, 10.10, 10.20, 10.26
Description:   HP issued a security advisory for HP/UX warning that the pcltotiff file conversion utility has unsafe permissions that could cause a denial of service condition. It may also allow a local user to gain additional privileges.

The affected file is:

/opt/sharedprint/bin/pcltotiff has unsafe permissions.

This file is reportedly assigned with group "bin" with set group id permissions, which is required to allow pcltotiff to read files in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/ifo.st/typefaces/.

An unspecified issue with the set group id permissions may allow a local user to cause an unspecified denial of service condition. Although the vendor does not confirm this, it may also allow a local user to gain additional "bin" privileges.

Impact:   A local user could cause an unspecified denial of service condition. Although the vendor does not confirm this, it may also allow a local user to gain additional "bin" privileges.
Solution:   As an interim measure, the vendor recommends that users change the permissions on /opt/sharedprint/bin/pcltotiff. Read the source message for details. Patches will be released at a later date.

**REVISED01**HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPANY SECURITY ADVISORY #0149, 19 April '01
Last revised: 26 April 2001
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The information in the following Security Advisory should be acted upon
as soon as possible. Hewlett-Packard Company will not be liable for any
consequences to any customer resulting from customer's failure to fully
implement instructions in this Security Advisory as soon as possible.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM: /opt/sharedprint/bin/pcltotiff has unsafe permissions.

PLATFORM: HP9000 Series 700/800 running HP-UX releases 10.01,
           10.10, 10.20, and 10.26.

DAMAGE: Denial of service.

SOLUTION: Change the permissions on /opt/sharedprint/bin/pcltotiff.

AVAILABILITY: A bulletin will be issued when patches are available.
CHANGE SUMMARY: Typographical error corrections in script.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I.
   A. Background

/opt/sharedprint/bin/pcltotiff is in group bin with set group id
permissions. This is necessary to allow pcltotiff to read files
      in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/ifo.st/typefaces/.

   B. Fixing the problem

Remove the set group id permissions from pcltotiff and
      allow read access to /usr/lib/X11/fonts/ifo.st/typefaces/.

   C. Recommended solution

      /sbin/chmod 555 /opt/sharedprint/bin/pcltotiff
      /sbin/chmod o+r /usr/lib/X11/fonts/ifo.st/typefaces/*

      To avoid swverify errors:
**REVISED 01:
      #!/sbin/sh
      /usr/sbin/swmodify -x files='/opt/sharedprint/bin/pcltotiff' \
        SharedPrint.SHPRNT-PCL

       for i in `/sbin/ls /usr/lib/X11/fonts/ifo.st/typefaces`
       do
        /usr/sbin/swmodify \
          -x files="/usr/lib/X11/fonts/ifo.st/typefaces/$i" \
          X11.X11-FONTSRV
      done
**END REVISION 01
