(Red Hat Issues Fix) Mozilla Firefox Command-line URL Processing Bug Lets Remote Users Open Tabs and Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1020509
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id?1020509
CVE Reference:  CVE-2008-2933   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jul 16 2008
Impact:  Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes   Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Advisory:  Red Hat Advisory
Version(s): 2.0.0.15 and prior versions; 3.0
Description:  A vulnerability was reported in Mozilla Firefox. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.

Another application that can invoke Firefox (while Firefox is not already running) can pass a specially crafted command-line URI containing pipe symbols to cause Firefox to open multiple tabs.

This can be exploited to access files on the target user's system or, in combination with an input validation vulnerability in an XUL-based error page, to execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.

Billy Rios reported this vulnerability. Ben Turner and Dan Veditz reported the XUL error page input validation vulnerability.

Impact:  A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.
Solution:  Red Hat has released a fix.

Firefox executing local malicious content with chrome privileges.
(CVE-2008-2933)

All firefox users should upgrade to these updated packages, which contain
Firefox 3.0.1 that corrects these issues.
