Description: A vulnerability was reported in Mozilla Firefox. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.
The browser does not properly process the 'FirefoxURL' URL protocol. A remote user can create specially crafted HTML that, when
loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary shell commands with arbitrary arguments on the target system. The commands will
run with the privileges of the target user.
Billy (BK) Rios, Nate Mcfeters, and Raghav "the Pope" Dube reported this vulnerability.
The
original advisory is available at:

Thor Larholm originally reported
this type of vulnerability as applied to Microsoft Internet Explorer:
http://larholm.com/2007/07/10/internet-explorer-0day-exploit/
[Editor's
note: Some users dispute that Internet Explorer is at fault.]
Jesper Johansson and others reported that other URI protocol handlers
(e.g., mailto, news, nntp, snews, and telnet) are also affected and still vulnerable in Firefox 2.0.0.5.
Firefox version 2.0.0.6
does not properly process %-encoded sequences.

|
Impact: A remote user can create HTML that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.
|
Solution: The vendor issued a fixed version (2.0.0.8).
The Mozilla advisory is available at:
http://www.mozilla.org/security/announce/2007/mfsa2007-36.html
The
vendor previously issued version 2.0.0.6 to address flaws in some protocol handlers, but that version did not address flaws in processing
%-encoded sequences. The previous Mozilla advisory is available at:
http://www.mozilla.org/security/announce/2007/mfsa2007-27.html
The
vendor previously issued version 2.0.0.5 to address some of the 'Firefox URI' flaws, but that version did not address flaws in other
URI protocol handlers (e.g., mailto, news, nntp, snews, and telnet). The previous Mozilla advisory is available at:
