Description:  A vulnerability was reported in the Microsoft Office RichEdit component. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.

A remote user can create an Rich Text Format file with a specially crafted embedded OLE object that, when loaded by the target user, will trigger a memory corruption error and execute arbitrary code on the target system. The code will run with the privileges of the target user.

The vulnerable component is also included in Microsoft Project 2000 SR1 and 2002 SP1, Microsoft Visio 2002 SP2, Microsoft Learning Essentials 1.0, 1.1, and 1.5 for Microsoft Office, Microsoft Global Input Method Editor for Office 2000 (Japanese), and Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac.

Microsoft Windows 2000, 2003, and XP operating systems are also affected.

The 2007 Microsoft Office System, Microsoft Excel 2003 Viewer, and Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 Viewer are not affected.

Microsoft credits Kostya Kortchinsky of Immunity, Inc. and Fabrice Desclaux from EADS Common Research Center with reporting this vulnerability.

Impact:  A remote user can create a file that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.
