Microsoft Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Name Server Resolution Bug Lets Remote Users Conduct Man-in-the-Middle Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1019033
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id?1019033
CVE Reference:  CVE-2007-5355   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Dec 3 2007
Impact:  Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information
Exploit Included:  Yes   Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Advisory:  Microsoft Security Advisory
Version(s): 2000 SP4, 2003 SP2, XP SP2, Vista; and prior service packs
Description:  A vulnerability was reported in the Microsoft Web Proxy Auto-Discovery feature. A remote user may be able to conduct man-in-the-middle attacks.

The feature incorrectly resolves domain names to locate a Web Proxy Auto-Discover (WPAD) server. A remote user can host a WPAD server and cause the WPAD client to use the remote user's WPAD server as a proxy server. This may allow man-in-the-middle attacks.

Target users with 3rd level or deeper domain names are affected.

The WPAD client may resolve to "wpad.[2nd level domain].[top level domain]", which would be located outside of the target user's 3rd level domain.

Beau Butler reported this vulnerability.

Impact:  A remote user may be able to conduct man-in-the-middle attacks.
Solution:  No solution was available at the time of this entry.

Microsoft has described some workarounds in their advisory.
