Description: Two vulnerabilities were reported in Symantec BackupExec System Recovery. A local user can obtain elevated privileges on the target system. A local user can view passwords.
A local user can trigger a buffer overflow in the service manager function to execute arbitrary code on the target system with System
level privileges.
When scheduled backups of local disks are saved to remote network shares, encrypted login credentials for the
remote share are stored in the application directory with read access for the 'everyone' group. A local user can view the encrypted
passwords. The key for the encrypted passwords is based on the plain text user name stored in the configuration file, allowing
a local user to recover the key and access the decrypted passwords.
The Norton Ghost, Norton Save & Recovery, and LiveState Recovery
products are also affected.
Symantec BackupExec is not affected.
The vendor was notified on January 2, 2007.
Symantec credits
Pravus and iDefense Labs with reporting these vulnerabilities.
