Description:  A vulnerability was reported in SpamAssassin. A remote user can execute arbitrary commands on the target system in certain configurations.

If spamd is run with the "--vpopmail" and "-P" options, a remote user can send a specially crafted input message to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the target user.

The flaw resides in the handle_user() function in 'spamd/spamd.raw'.

Impact:  A remote user can execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the target user.
Solution:  The vendor has issued a fixed version (3.1.3), available at:

3.1.3 fixes a remote code execution vulnerability if spamd is run with the
"--vpopmail" and "-P" options.  If either/both of those options are not
used, there is no vulnerability.  There was also a fix for the userstate
directory and prefs file not being created.
