Date: Feb 21 2006
|
Impact: Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
|
Exploit Included: Yes
|
Description: A vulnerability was reported in Safari. A remote user can cause arbitrary commands to be executed on the target user's system.
A remote user can place a shell script in a ZIP archive and name the script file with a '.jpg' or '.mov' file extension and also
include a metadata file that specifies the use of Terminal to load the script file. If the shell script is missing the shell interpreter
specification line (i.e., shebang line), the target user's Safari browser will execute the shell commands without prompting the
target user.
This can be exploited if the "Open 'safe' files after downloading" option is enabled [the default setting].
This
can be exploited via HTML that references the ZIP archive.
Apple's Mail application may also be affected.
Michael Lehn discovered

|
Impact: A remote user can cause arbitrary commands to be executed on the target user's system. The commands will run with the privileges of the target user.
|
Solution: No solution was available at the time of this entry.
For a potential workaround, deactivate the option "Open 'safe' files after downloading" in the "General" section of the Safari preferences menu.
