Description: Several vulnerabilities were reported in Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE). A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system. A remote user can obtain information from the target user's browser.
The browser does not properly process HTML with certain layout positioning combinations [CVE-2006-3450].
The browser does not
properly process chained Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) [CVE-2006-3451].
The browser does not properly render HTML with certain
layout combinations [CVE-2006-3637].
The browser does not properly instantiate COM objects that are not intended to be instantiated
using IE [CVE-2006-3638].
The browser does not properly handle certain redirects and may let arbitrary scripting code execute
in an arbitrary domain [CVE-2006-3639].
The browser may allow a script to persist across user navigation actions to access to
the location of a Window in another domain or IE zone CVE-2006-3640].
A remote user can create specially crafted HTML that, when
loaded by the target user, will be able to obtain information from the target user's browser or execute arbitrary code on the target
user's system.
Microsoft credits Sam Thomas working with TippingPoint, Cody Pierce of the TippingPoint Security Research Team,
and Will Dormann of CERT/CC with reporting some of these vulnerabilities.

Solution: On August 8, 2006, Microsoft issued patches as part of a cumulative update for IE.
On August 15, 2006, Microsoft reported a non-security
issue with MS06-042 that affects IE 6.0 SP1 only in certain situations.
On August 22, 2006, eEye Digital Security reported that
the non-security issue with the MS06-042 patch was actually a buffer overflow vulnerability that can be exploited by remote users
[a separate Alert has been issued regarding this vulnerability].
On August 24, 2006, Microsoft reissued the original MS06-042
patches for IE 6 SP1 to correct the buffer overflow that was present in the original set of MS06-042 patches for IE 6 SP1.
On
September 12, 2006, Microsoft reissued the MS06-042 updates for IE 5 SP4 and IE 6 SP1 to correct a buffer overflow in the original
patches and the first set of patches.
A restart is required.
