Original Entry Date: Apr 24 2006
|
Impact: Denial of service via network, Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
|
Fix Available: Yes
Vendor Confirmed: Yes
|
Version(s): 0.10.14 and prior versions
|
Description: A vulnerability was reported in Ethereal. A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system. A remote user can cause denial of service conditions.
Several dissectors contain vulnerabilities. A remote user can send specially crafted data to trigger a buffer overflow and execute
arbitrary code on the target system. The code will run with the privileges of the target user.
A remote user can send specially
crafted data to cause the target service to crash or enter an infinite loop.
The H.248, UMA, X.509if, SRVLOC, H.245, COPS, ALCAP,
AIM, RPC, DCERPC, ASN.1, SMB PIPE, BER, SNDCP, GSM SMS, ALCAP, and telnet dissectors are affected.
Also, the Ethereal OID printing
routine, statistics counter, and general packet dissectors are affected.
A specially crafted Sniffer capture or invalid display
filter can cause Ethereal to crash.
The Network Instruments file code NetXray/Windows Sniffer file code is also affected.
|
Impact: A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system.
A remote user can cause denial of service conditions.
|
Solution: The vendor has issued a fixed version (0.99.0), available at:

Impact:
It may be possible to make Ethereal crash, use up available system resources, or run
arbitrary code by injecting a purposefully malformed packet onto the wire or by
convincing someone to read a malformed trace file.
Resolution:
Upgrade to 0.10.14.
Due to the severity and scope of the defects that have been discovered, no workaround
is available.
