|
Impact: Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
|
Version(s): 10.30
|
Description: A vulnerability was reported in Netpbm. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.
The 'pnmtopng' conversion program used to convert Portable Anymap (PNM) files into Portable Network Graphics (PNG) does not properly
initialize certain variables. A remote user can create a specially crafted PNM file that, when processed by the target user with
pnmtopng with the '-trans' option, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.
The flaw resides in '/pnm/pnmtopng.c'
where the palette_size variable is not properly initialized.
|
Impact: A remote user can create a file that, when processed by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system with the privileges of the target user.
|
Solution: No upstream solution was available at the time of this entry.
Red Hat has issued a fix for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4:

Subject: netpbm vulnerability
|
Ubuntu reported:
A buffer overflow was found in the "pnmtopng" conversion program. By
tricking an user (or automated system) to process a specially crafted
PNM image with pnmtopng, this could be exploited to execute arbitrary
code with the privileges of the user running pnmtopng.
