Description: Several vulnerabilities were provided in Veritas Backup Exec. A remote user can cause the target system to crash. A remote user
can also modify the operating system configuration. A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system.
A remote user can exploit an access control vulnerability in VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows to modify the target system's Windows
Registry with "Administrator" privileges.
A remote user can also exploit flaws in the VERITAS Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows
Servers and Remote Agent for NetWare Servers to cause the target system to crash. The flaws are due to improper processing of certain
request packets and a null pointer reference.
A remote user can exploit a buffer overflow in VERITAS Software Backup Exec Remote
Agent in the processing of certain authentication requests to execute arbitrary code on the target system.
Backup Exec 10.0 for
Windows Servers rev. 5520 and Backup Exec 9.1.1156 for NetWare Servers are not affected.

AL-2005.013 -- AUSCERT ALERT
Veritas Backup Exec - multiple vulnerabilities
23 June 2005
===========================================================================
AusCERT Alert Summary
---------------------
Product: Veritas Backup Exec 10.0 rev 5484 and prior (Windows)
Veritas Backup Exec 10.0 rev 5520 and prior (NetWare)
Operating System: Windows
Novell NetWare
Impact: Administrator Compromise
Denial of Service
Access: Remote/Unauthenticated
Existing Account
CVE Names: CAN-2005-0771 CAN-2005-0772 CAN-2005-0773
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin describes six vulnerabilities in Veritas Backup Exec.
1. Remote registry access vulnerability CAN-2005-0771
An access validation vulnerability in Backup Exec for Windows allows
remote attackers to access the Windows registry on the backup server
with Administrator privileges.
2. Remote Agent for Windows buffer overflow CAN-2005-0773
The Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers contains a buffer
overflow vulnerability due to incorrect validation on
authentication requests, allowing a remote attacker to execute
arbitrary code.
3. Admin Plus Pack remote heap overflow
Backup Exec for Windows using the Admin Plus Pack option has a
heap overflow vulnerability that may be exploited by an
unauthenticated remote attacker who can connect to the TCP port
on which the Backup Exec service is listening.
4. Process handle privilege elevation
Non-privileged local users on systems where the Backup Exec Remote
Agent for Windows is installed can copy the handle used by the Agent,
and thereby execute arbitrary code with Local System privileges.
5. Web Administration Console buffer overflow
The Web Administration Console, which may be installed on the Backup
Exec media server, has a buffer overflow vulnerability when parsing
user-provided credentials.
6. Remote Agent denial of service CAN-2005-0772
Two buffer overflows in the Remote Agent for Windows or NetWare
Servers allow unauthenticated remote attackers to cause a denial
of service on computers where the Agent is installed.
These vulnerabilities reportedly can not be exploited to execute
arbitrary code.
IMPACT:
1. A remote attacker can gain Administrator access to the registry
and then use this to gain complete administrative control of the
backup server.
2. A remote attacker can execute arbitrary code on the computers
where the Remote Agent is installed, and gain administrative
control of these computers.
3. An unauthenticated remote attacker can execute arbitrary code on
the backup server and gain administrative control of the computer.
4. Local users on computers where the Backup Exec Remote Agent is
installed can gain Local System privileges.
5. A user of the Web Administration Console can execute arbitrary code
on the Backup Exec media server and gain administrative control of
the computer.
6. Unauthenticated attackers can remotely crash the computers which
have Backup Exec Remote Agent installed.
MITIGATION:
Veritas has released patches fixing all six vulnerabilities. These
can be downloaded via the following patch summary web page:
