Blackberry Attachment Service TIFF and PNG File Processing Bugs May Let Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1015426
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id?1015426
CVE Reference:  CVE-2005-2341 ,  CVE-2005-2344   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Jan 10 2006
Original Entry Date:  Dec 30 2005
Impact:  Denial of service via network, Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes   Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.0 and later versions
Description:  A vulnerability was reported in the Blackberry Attachment Service on the Blackberry Enterprise Server. A remote user can cause denial of service conditions. A remote user may be able to execute arbitrary code.

A remote user can create a specially crafted Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) file that, when viewed by the target user on a Blackberry device, will trigger a heap overflow on the Blackberry Attachment Service and cuase the service to crash or potentially execute arbitrary code [CVE-2005-2341]. The Attachment Service will restart immediately or after a period of time.

As a result, a user may not be able to view attachments. No other Blackberry services are affected.

It may be possible to cause arbitrary code to be executed.

FX reported that the software also does not properly process portable network graphics (PNG) images [CVE-2005-2344]. Versions from 4.0 to 4.0.1.9 are affected.

FX of Phenoelit reported this vulnerability.

Impact:  A remote user can cause the Attachment Service to crash or potentially execute arbitrary code.
Solution:  The vendor has issued a fix (4.0 Service Pack 3, Hotfix 1 for Microsoft Exchange; 4.0 Service Pack 3 for IBM Lotus Domino and Novell GroupWise) for the PNG vulnerability.

The vendor's advisories are available at:
