SqWebMail Bug in Filtering IMG Tags Lets Remote Users Inject Arbitrary Scripting Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1014810
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id?1014810
CVE Reference:  CAN-2005-2724   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Sep 2 2005
Original Entry Date:  Aug 29 2005
Impact:  Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes   Exploit Included:  Yes   Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Advisory:  Secunia Research
Version(s): 5.0.4
Description:  A vulnerability was reported in SqWebMail. A remote user can cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed on the target user's system.

The software does not properly filter HTML code in e-mail messages. A remote user can send an HTML-based e-mail message containing arbitrary scripting code. When the target user views the message, the scripting code will be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the SqWebMail software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A demonstration exploit example is provided:

The vendor was notified on August 26, 2005.

Jakob Balle of Secunia Research discovered this vulnerability.

Impact:  A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the SqWebMail software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.
Solution:  The vendor has issued a fixed development snapshot version (5.0.4.20050826), available at:

3) Description of Vulnerability

Secunia Research has discovered a vulnerability in SqWebMail, which
can be exploited by malicious people to conduct script insertion
attacks.

The vulnerability is caused due to SqWebMail failing to properly
sanitise HTML emails. This can be exploited to include arbitrary
script code in HTML emails, which will be executed in context of the
SqWebMail server, as soon as the user views a received email.

Example:
<img src="cid:>" onError="alert(document.domain);">

Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary script code
and makes it possible for a malicious person to perform the same
actions as the user of the webmail account (e.g. sending or viewing
emails).

4) Solution

The vendor has issued an updated version of SqWebMail, which fixes
this vulnerability.
